Turbo Training!A huge thank you to Dave and Kath for organising the first “Sleaford Wheelers Turbo Session” There was a good turnout and all those that attended appeared to enjoy themselves – the pools of sweat was testament to their enjoyment!! See you all next week. Linda |

Silk Willoughby Village Hall has been booked on Thursday nights 7.30 - 9.30 starting on 4 November. We have the hall over a six week period although there are five sessions as it is unavailable on 25 November due to a parish council meeting. This is a bit of a trial to see how we go although the committee hopes that they will prove popular. The idea is that the hall will open at 7.30 and time will be allowed to set up before the turbo session starts. Turboing will last around an hour followed by time to clear up and have a drink/chat.
Each session will cost you £2.00 which includes tea and coffee. You don't have to turbo if you don't want to sweat a lot - chatting to your mates is fine. If you do want to take part, you will obviously need to bring your turbo and a bike and I'm looking for a volunteer (or
volunteers) to lead the sessions ( basically shouting at people to make them work harder). If you've been to spinning in the past, you'll know what I mean. We also need someone to bring along a ghetto blaster (or a portable hifi of some sort) and CDs suitable for the sessions.
So, let me know by the weekend if you are intending to go and whether you are prepared to lead one or more of the sessions. If you've got a ghetto blaster or similar that you can bring along and/or some CDs, I also need to know.
If you have a spare turbo you can bring along to loan/sell to someone who hasn't or if you would like to come along but haven't got a turbo, would you let me know (also by the weekend).

Long Sunday run
11 of us set off for our 100+ mile ride - well done to everyone; Nathan and Michael Hespley hadn't tacked that sort of distance before; George, James and Darren made it their second 'ton' of the week; and particularly well done to Gavin who hadn't really been on his bike much at all for - well, goodness knows how long! He hadn't even intended to stay out all day with us.

Local Club, Sleaford Wheelers, were keen to defend their Go-ride Club champions title which they won last year and started in great style with George Thompson winning the 4 lap individual Pursuit. Spalding CC fought back hard in the one lap sprint events providing the winners in the girls' event (Jenny McAndrew) and the under 14s (Reece Moradakan). The young team from Witham Wheelers rounded off the first session when Ashley Money won the under 16s boys sprint.
So, after 4 events, Spalding were leading with 36 points to Sleaford's 34 and Witham's 27. The reigning champions had a narrow victory in the Team Sprint by a couple of seconds and retook the lead going into the final series of scratch races. Jenny McAndrew again scored maximum points for Spalding in the Girl's scratch race but sisters Alice and Grace Hayler kept Sleaford in contention with second and third placings.
Sleaford still had a seven point advantage with two events to go. Spalding would not go away and fought back well in the under 14s scratch event, scoring 16 points with first and second places being taken by Reece Moradakan and Jake Norton. The tables had now been turned and Spalding lead Sleaford by 4 points (73 to 69) with just the Under 16 boys 6 lap scratch race to go.
This final race was won in style by the very impressive George Thompson of Sleaford with team-mate Nathan Williamson in 4th place and Henry Thompson 8th. Spalding's sterling efforts to lift the trophy from Sleaford were thwarted by a very good performance by the Witham Wheelers duo of Peter Cocker and Ashley Money who took 2nd and 3rd places forcing the Spalding riders down into 5th, 6th and 7th places to collect only 9 points between them.
The overall result was a narrow victory for Sleaford Wheelers with 84 points to Spalding's 82. The youngsters from Grantham's Witham Wheelers rode with great enthusiasm and finished with 50 points. Jill Sewell from HSBC, the event sponsor, presented the prizes, ably assisted by Richard Kennedy, Chairman of British Cycling East Midlands Region

The Nev Crane Memorial Open 25 July 11th 2010
What a morning. Quite windy or so it seemed. What can one say about the epic performance of Matt Bottrill. Okay, Silver Medallist in this years National ‘25’ but a short 51 on the rough surface C25/35. Astonishing!So too was the ride of 15 year old Kristian Woolf. In only his second event at the distance he is already well under the hour. Congratulations to all prize winners. |

Due to Doug's disappointment at the lack of ladies entering the Nev Crane Event, Boston Wheelers came up with a "solution". Alan Sharpe and Steve Blackburn pledged £20 each if Asa Elkington and Darren Smith would ride the race dressed as "Ladies". The money to go to our Charity of the Year.

Manchester Velodrome Visit
As you may know 16 of us visited Manchester a couple of weeks ago. The trip was a reward for the juniors for winning Heckington show with the spare places being made up by seniors. It was a thrilling afternoon and it is proposed that we make this an annual event.

A magnificent contribution from riders, Steve Forman, Howard, event organisers et al meant we were able to present Cancer Research with a cheque for £800 at the cyclo cross on 20th September - thanks to all who contributed, especially to the riders in the Charity '10' who all rode even when no prize money was on offer.
Doug Laidlow's Birthday RideWhen most people are reading their Sunday papers over a cup of tea and even the wheelers are just about thinking of getting up to go in to Sleaford for the club ride, Doug for his 75th Birthday is trundling around the Lincolnshire villages for his annual 100 mile charity ride.Click for full report. |

The Nev Crane Memorial Time Trial (click for more) Nev's widow Jean presented the Trophy to the Memorial Event. It is presented each year to the quickest rider from the Sleaford Wheelers. The first rider to put his name on it was Mark Colclough. In 2008 it changed hands when Jim Boyle put in a sterling performance to take 2nd place from 105 riders. 2009 and it was all change again with Mark regaining the Trophy. |
